About LA Knockers

This blog was created by Elisa Leonelli, with the collaboration of Jennifer Stace, founder of the LA Knockers (and we’re both still kicking 30 years later…)

Elisa

ELISA LEONELLI, photographer

Born and raised in Italy, moved to Los Angeles in 1973. Started working as a photo-journalist in 1974. First assignment: photograph LA landmarks for Coast magazine.

Correspondent for Italian magazines like Tempo, Espresso and Europeo from 1976, covered visually-interesting theatre performances. This is how she discovered and photographed the L.A. Knockers, also the Mystic Knights of Oingo Boingo and the Kipper Kids.
Traveled to London to cover the punk rock scene in 1977. Here’s a self-portrait from those days, the legendary 70s.

JENNIFER STACE, dancer-choreographer

L.A. Knockers, created by Jennifer Stace in 1974.  Described as “Los Angeles’ hottest, flashiest, all-female dance experience.”
Jennifer believes that disco dancing is a direct reflection of the ever-changing fashions of today’s styles and attitudes. In her choreography, she introduces a variety of disco styles which include: partnering, poses, freezes, punking, locking, gymnastics, robot or mime, S&M theatrical satire, and high camp attitudes. Her choreography uses ballet and jazz as a necessary technique in the development of disco as an art-form.

Here’s a photo of Jennifer from 1979, as Charlie Chaplin dancing with many girls in the ballet “Red Shoes”
